Tribal Elder Killed in Targeted Shooting in Nangarhar Province
A prominent tribal elder was shot and killed in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday morning, local authorities confirmed. The victim, identified as Hajiullah Nazar, was targeted by unidentified armed individuals riding motorcycles in the Surkhrod district of Nangarhar province.
According to local sources and police officials, the attack occurred as Nazar was leaving his residence. Gunmen approached the scene on motorcycles and opened fire before fleeing. The exact number of attackers and their motive remain unclear.
The Taliban police command in Nangarhar officially acknowledged the incident and confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend those responsible. Security personnel have secured the immediate area and are currently collecting forensic evidence alongside witness testimonies to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The killing comes amid a series of targeted attacks against local figures in the region. Earlier this month, a prominent individual was similarly assassinated in Herat province, prompting renewed concerns over security for community leaders and tribal elders.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances of the shooting or the status of any suspects. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have urged residents to report any information related to the incident to local security offices.
