UK Envoy Urges Restraint and Dialogue Following Cross-Border Strikes in Kunar

The United Kingdom’s special envoy to Afghanistan, Richard Lindsay, has voiced concern over recent cross-border military strikes in eastern Kunar province, urging both Kabul and Islamabad to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic engagement.

Reports indicate that Pakistani forces launched attacks on Monday afternoon targeting several areas, including the central Kunar, Marawara, Dangam, and Sheltan districts, as well as the campus of Sayyid Jamaluddin Afghan University. The strikes reportedly resulted in seven civilian deaths and left 75 individuals injured, with casualties including women, children, and approximately 30 university students.

Lindsay addressed the situation on the social media platform X, calling for the immediate protection of civilians and a de-escalation of hostilities along the border. He emphasized that ongoing disputes between the two neighboring countries must be resolved through dialogue rather than military force.

During a recent visit to Kabul, Lindsay met with officials from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He described the discussions as productive and stressed the necessity of sustained diplomatic efforts to address regional security challenges. The envoy’s public remarks follow a period of heightened tension along the Durand Line, where cross-border incidents have increasingly impacted border communities.

International observers and diplomatic channels continue to monitor the situation, with repeated calls for both governments to step back from further military action and return to bilateral negotiations to ensure civilian safety and long-term regional stability.
