U.S. Deploys USS Tripoli with 3,500 Marines to CENTCOM Region Amid Middle East Tensions

U.S. Central Command has deployed the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship carrying about 3,500 Marines, to its area of responsibility.

CENTCOM issued a statement describing the deployment as part of an amphibious ready group equipped with transport aircraft, strike fighters and other assets. The USS Tripoli, forward-deployed from Japan, measures 850 feet in length and displaces 45,000 tons. It can carry F-35B strike fighters and MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.

The move comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East as the U.S.-Israel war on Iran enters its second month.

Pakistan is mediating diplomatically, hosting talks with Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt while relaying messages between the U.S. and Iran. Tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban in Afghanistan persist following the collapse of a brief Eid ceasefire, after which Pakistani operations resumed.

China has urged Pakistan and the Taliban to pursue talks and de-escalation.
